Bar Description
If youโre looking for a spot that effortlessly bridges the gap between a neighborhood gastropub and a family-friendly comfort food destination, The Red Hen in Swedesboro is it. Located in the heart of downtown, this venue has cemented itself as a local staple since opening its doors in 2012. It occupies a space that feels both rustic and lively, offering an atmosphere that is perfect whether youโre grabbing a quick lunch, settling in for a happy hour with coworkers, or enjoying a relaxed weekend dinner.
The history of The Red Hen is tied to its mission of being a “scratch kitchen” that prioritizes quality ingredients without the pretense. It is a place where the hospitality feels genuine, and the vibe is consistently energetic. From the exposed brick and wood accents to the welcoming bar area, it captures the essence of a modern American tavern that hasnโt forgotten its roots.
Features & Highlights
It’s our opinion that this is the Best Craft Beer bar in all of South Jersey.ย Behind the bar you’ll likely find Andrew who is as passionate as it comes when it comes to craft beer.ย ย Their selection may not be the largest in the area, but it’s without a doubt one of the heaviest hitters when it comes to highly rated beers.ย If you can find a craft beer bar with as many 4+ rated beers on tap as the Red Hen we definitely have to know about it.
The menu is a testament to elevated comfort food. Regulars swear by the “Hen House” Burger, a juicy, towering creation that consistently ranks among the best in the area. Other standouts include their Short Rib Mac & Cheese, which is rich and satisfying, and their crispy Brussels Sprouts, which have converted many skeptics. They also offer a solid selection of steaks and seafood, ensuring that there is something for every palate.ย You also can’t forget about the pizzas.ย It’s a toss up between the Honey Chicken Siracha or the Short Rib as to which is the best.
Their cocktail program is equally impressive, with a focus on seasonal ingredients. The “Red Hen” Sangria is a perennial favorite, as are their creative takes on mules and margaritas. For whiskey lovers, their shelf is well-stocked, and the staff is knowledgeable enough to guide you to a new favorite. It is the kind of place where the drink in your hand is as good as the meal on your plate.
Another thing that’s unique about the Red Hen is that it shares a bar with BLK SHPย which is known for it’s Tapas style menu.ย PRO TIP:ย Sit at the bar and you can order from both menus.

1 Review on “The Red Hen”
I guess the first thing I should address is that this is multiple places with a shared bar in the middle. I have only eaten from the Red Hen menu so I can’t really comment on the BLK SHP side.
The atmosphere at the bar is great. It can get crowded so there have been a few times where we had to wait for tables to eat. Crowded usually means they are doing something right so you can’t complain there.
As for the food, I feel like I can’t go there without a Shorty (Short Rib Pizza), but the Honey Siracha Chicken Pizza is definitely a safe 2nd choice. I’ve even gotten a few sandwiches there and every time I’m never disappointed. If you can make room, I’d also suggest the crab fries before dinner.
The service is outstanding. I maybe only get down there once a month, but Andrew the bartender remembers me and knows exactly what type of beer I’m going to like. It’s the only place where I let the bartender pick what I’m going to drink. If only other bars closer to me had someone with this much passion for the craft.
I think they have a cocktail menu because I know my wife has had a few mixed drinks there. Either way their bar is pretty well stocked and the bartenders are always making drinks.
The beer selection is TOP NOTCH. I heard about the Red Hen from a few beer enthusiasts I know so the word is out on them. They have a few standards on tap for the people who dislike flavor, but their craft stuff is like no other bar in NJ. They don’t have a ton of beer on tap, but the Untappd ratings on the stuff they have is generally like 4.10 to 4.5 which is pretty incredible.
It’s a 5 out of 5 for me. Luckily they are far enough away that I give some other bars a try too.
