A West Deptford Legacy Reborn
If you’re looking for the heart of West Deptford, you’ll find it at Southwood Bar & Grill. For over 50 years, this Mantua Pike staple has been the definitive neighborhood gathering spot, but recently, it has entered a vibrant new chapter. Now under the passionate care of locals John and Denice DiCarlo—longtime community leaders with deep roots in the town—Southwood has undergone a massive renovation that respects its dive-bar soul while elevating the entire experience.
The Features & Vibe
The first thing you’ll notice (or rather, won’t) is the scent; a state-of-the-art kitchen overhaul means the “fried wing aroma” of decades past has been replaced by the smell of an indoor barbecue-style grill. The menu is a love letter to elevated pub comfort, featuring what many regulars claim is the best cheesesteak in the county, alongside standout “Jersey Burgers” and a surprisingly robust Tex-Mex selection.
Entertainment is a cornerstone here. Whether it’s live blues bands, acoustic performers, or high-energy trivia nights, the atmosphere is always electric. The new layout features attractive lighting, fresh flooring, and a seamless connection to the rear outdoor patio area, making it just as suitable for a sunny afternoon drink as it is for a late-night music set. Biker-friendly and community-focused, it’s a place where you’re treated like family the moment you walk through the side entrance.
A Bit of History
Originally founded by Dottie and Rich, Southwood served as the local “watering hole” for generations. When Dottie decided it was time to move on, the DiCarlos stepped in to ensure this community hub didn’t disappear. John actually frequented the bar when he first reached legal drinking age, and his commitment to the town (including over 20 years leading West Deptford Soccer) shines through in the bar’s warm, welcoming mission.
