Bar Description
If you’re cruising down Olde New Jersey Avenue in the heart of the North Wildwood entertainment district, it’s impossible to miss the neon-lit, high-energy magnetism of Joe Joe’s Tacos and Tequila. This is where the boardwalk-slice tradition of North Wildwood meets a gritty, open-air Mexican cantina. It’s loud, it’s often crowded, and it perfectly captures that “no-shower happy hour” vibe that makes Anglesea legendary.
Joe Joe’s is a study in South Jersey evolution. For years, it was primarily known as Joe Joe’s Place, a local go-to for some of the best pizza on the island (voted #1 by many locals). However, seeing the district’s shift toward high-volume nightlife, the owners expanded, rebranded, and recently demolished the adjacent “Curiosity Shop” to double down on their footprint. The result is a sprawling, hybrid venue that operates as part-pizzeria, part-taco-shack, and part-open-air nightclub.
The Experience: What to Honestly Expect
Let’s be real: you aren’t coming here for a quiet, candlelit dinner. You’re coming for the energy. The seating is a mix of high-tops and low tables, but during peak hours, the standing-room-only crowd around the massive front bar can make it feel more like a block party than a restaurant.
The Food: The menu is split between two identities. On one side, you have the Tacos and Gringo Favorites. Patrons rave about the Beef Barbacoa Tacos and the Chicken Quesadillas, but the “Jose’s Loco Grande” nachos—piled high with chorizo, queso fundido, and guacamole—are the true champions of the late-night menu. On the other side is the pizza that started it all. If you want a break from tacos, their 18-inch pies (like the Colleen Gourmet with plum tomatoes and ricotta) are top-tier.
The Drinks & Vibe: As the name suggests, tequila is the main event. The Watermelon Margaritas are a 10/10 fan favorite—not too sweet and deceptively strong. The live music is a constant fixture, usually featuring acoustic acts or bands that lean into crowd-pleasing rock and party hits. Expect a diverse crowd: families with kids enjoying pizza in the early evening, transitioning into a high-energy 20-and-30-something party scene as the night progresses. Service is generally praised for being fast and “North Wildwood friendly,” but be prepared for a wait on holiday weekends.
