Chubby’s Steakhouse & Seafood: Gloucester Cityโs Art Deco Institution
Stepping into Chubbyโs Steakhouse & Seafood is less like dining out and more like taking a luxurious trip back in time to the height of the Jazz Age. For the South Jersey connoisseur seeking a blend of classic elegance and robust cuisine, Chubby’s is a true destination.
The moment you cross the threshold, the rich history of the space envelopes you. The building itself is a century-old landmark in historic Gloucester City, formerly a pharmacy and doctorโs office, now meticulously restored to preserve its exceptional vintage character.
The true heart of Chubbyโs for the bar enthusiast is the authentic Art Deco Style Bar. With its original restored tin ceilings, period-specific lighting, and sophisticated ambiance, it masterfully captures the mood of a prohibition-era speakeasy. This is where you can truly appreciate the establishmentโs famed history, which includes a reputation for serving the legendary “1ยฝ shots mixed drinks” in the post-prohibition era.
The bar program today is top-shelf, offering premium handcrafted cocktails that match the venue’s glamour, an excellent selection of fine wines, and a variety of domestic, imported, and essential craft beers on tap. The atmosphere is further elevated by their signature Jazz Nights held every Wednesday and Friday, making it a standout Live Music Bar for the region. Whether you’re unwinding after work or meeting associates, the Happy Hour specials are highly celebrated.
Beyond the bar, Chubby’s delivers a world-class steakhouse experience without the NYC price tag. They feature high-end fare like premium ‘1855’ USDA Certified Black Angus Beef (sourced from Philadelphia’s Wells Meats), including massive Ribeyes and melt-in-your-mouth Filet Mignon. Following the closure of the beloved Maxโs Seafood Cafรฉ, Chubbyโs has expanded its offerings to seamlessly incorporate many of Maxโs fan-favorite seafood specialties, cementing its new identity as a premier steak and seafood destination in the region. Itโs casual fine dining done right: sophisticated, yet friendly.
History of a South Jersey Legend
Chubbyโs storied history begins in 1933, founded by Joseph โChubbyโ Stafford as Chubbyโs 1ยฝ Hearth. It quickly established itself as a post-prohibition institution famous for its food, strong drinks, and live entertainment. While the restaurant went through transitions, it was gloriously “reborn” in March 2015 as Chubby’s 1ยฝ Hearth Steakhouse, taking its rightful place among the finest steakhouses in the Philadelphia area. The venue has since been recognized by top publications like Philly Magazine and NJ Monthly, which named it a Top 20 Steakhouse in New Jersey.
