Bar Description
The Mad Batter At The Carroll Villa Hotel
Step back in time and savor the flavor of South Jersey dining history at The Mad Batter Restaurant & Bar, nestled inside Cape May’s magnificent Carroll Villa Hotel. This venue isn’t just a bar or a restaurant; it’s the cherished “Granddaddy” of Cape May’s contemporary dining scene, offering a vibrant, cozy, and artistically inspired atmosphere that effortlessly blends Victorian charm with modern culinary and beverage excellence.
History & Ambiance
The story of The Mad Batter begins in 1976, when World War II veteran and entrepreneur Harry Kulkowitz opened the restaurant within the historic Carroll Villa Hotel, a registered National Historic Landmark dating back to 1882. Taking its whimsical name from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Mad Batter quickly garnered national acclaim—most notably after a glowing review from The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Jim Quinn—and paved the way for Cape May’s fine dining reputation.
While the Kulkowitz family established its culinary roots, the bar scene evolved dramatically. Initially a BYOB establishment, the property acquired its liquor license in 2001, ushering in the era of the Blue Bar. The space itself is a work of art, designed by Pam Huber (Mark Kulkowitz’s wife and business partner), featuring colorful glass mosaics and an eco-friendly IceStone bar top crafted from recycled glass and concrete. The resulting atmosphere is warm, cheerful, and unique—a true social hub for both locals and travelers.
