Bar Description
If you’re looking to escape the neon lights and crowded boards of the Wildwoods for something a bit more rustic and refined, The Lazy Bass is the ultimate bayside retreat. Tucked away on Old North Wildwood Blvd, this sprawling waterfront venue offers a “feet-in-the-sand” experience that perfectly captures the laid-back spirit of the Grassy Sound.
The history of the Lazy Bass is a relatively recent but fascinating addition to the area. Opened in 2020 by the Hand family (the same family behind the legendary Fred’s Tavern in Stone Harbor), the bar was born from a Facebook ad for a waterfront rental at the Grassy Sound Marina. What looks like a modest cedar shack from the road opens up into a massive, multi-level outdoor oasis. The centerpiece of the venue is a vintage rowboat—originally built in 1793—that has been cleverly retrofitted into the main bar to house ice-cold beer and draft lines.
Features & Ambiance
The Lazy Bass is defined by its three distinct zones: the sandy beach area (perfect for sinking your toes in while you drink), the massive wooden deck, and the nautical-themed bar. It is widely considered one of the best spots in Cape May County to catch the “golden hour” and a sunset over the marsh.
The venue operates with a unique rotating food truck model, meaning your culinary options change daily—from fresh seafood and fish fries to artisanal tacos and burgers. The drink program is equally vibrant, featuring their signature “Breaking Bass” cocktail, fresh fruit crushes, and a selection of local craft brews. With a consistent lineup of live acoustic music and a dog-friendly policy, it offers a high-energy yet relaxed atmosphere that feels more like a private beach party than a standard restaurant.
