Bar Description
If you are looking for an experience that transcends the typical Americanized “Irish Bar” and delivers the true, transformative spirit of a coastal Irish pub, Josie Kelly’s Public House is your destination. Located at the historic gateway to Ocean City, this isn’t just a place to grab a pintโitโs a massive, multi-roomed sanctuary of Irish hospitality that feels as if a piece of County Clare was picked up and dropped onto Shore Road.
The building itself is steeped in local history. Erected in 1908, it famously operated as Macโs Restaurant for 60 years, becoming a Shore landmark under the Previti family. After a few transitions, owners Dermot Lloyd and Kathleen Lloyd (an Irish-American duo with deep roots in the industry) took over, naming the pub after Dermotโs grandmother, Josephine Kelly. They meticulously restored the interior, replacing the “seafood bistro” vibe with eclectic bric-a-brac, family heirlooms, and mismatched furniture that makes the massive space feel as cozy as a grandmotherโs living room.
The Experience: What to Expect
Walking into Josie Kelly’s, you will likely encounter one of two atmospheres. The Main Bar is often high-energy, bustling, and loudโexactly what youโd expect from a great public house. However, if you keep walking, youโll find the Whiskey Bar and second dining room, which features a fireplace and a library-like setting that is perfect for conversation.
Patrons consistently praise the “no-shortcuts” approach of the kitchen. While you can get a great burger, the real draw is the authentic Irish fare. The Fish & Chips are widely considered some of the best at the Shore, and the Shepherdโs Pie and Bangers & Mash are executed with a finesse that elevates them above standard pub grub. One of the most unique features is their dedicated Gluten-Free menu; the kitchen operates with separate fryers and prep spaces, making it a rare “safe haven” for Celiac diners who still want to enjoy traditional fried Irish favorites.
On Sundays, the house comes alive with traditional Irish Jam Sessions, and the Adare Ballroom upstairs serves as a premier venue for live music and events. It is a place for “libations and banter,” where the service is professional but feels like a welcome from an old friend.
