Bar Description
If youโre looking for a spot that bridges the gap between a gritty neighborhood pub and a polished craft beer destination, The Mile Bar on the Black Horse Pike is exactly that. Itโs a “Pub & Kitchen” that doesn’t try too hard to be fancy, but takes its liquid offerings very seriously. Since opening in August 2018, it has transformed the old Antoniettaโs (and before that, Freddyโs) into a high-energy social hub. Owned by South Jersey local Dave Welsh (the man behind the South Jersey RunningCo. stores and Reunion Hall), the name “The Mile” is a clever nod to his background in the local running community and the bar’s predecessor, Westmontโs former Irish Mile.
Walking in, youโre greeted by a dark, industrial-leaning aesthetic with copper accents and a massive T-shaped bar that anchors the room. The vibe is decidedly “Philly-meets-Jersey”โcasual enough for a post-work beer but vibrant enough that it can get loud and packed quickly on weekends. Expect a crowd thatโs a mix of local regulars and craft beer hunters who have traveled specifically for the tap list.
The Drink Experience
For a bar enthusiast, the draw here is the 36 rotating taps. This is not your standard “macro-only” tap tower; The Mile prides itself on being “New Jersey Proud,” frequently showcasing local heavyweights like Tonewood, Double Nickel, Kane, and Cape May Brewing.
-
The Beer: Whether youโre after a hazy IPA, a crisp local lager, or a heavy barrel-aged stout, the list is diverse and well-curated. They utilize an industrial tap system installed by Philly Homebrew Outlet, ensuring your pour is clean and fresh.
-
Cask & Spirits: The bar often features beer engines for cask-conditioned ales and a full bar stocked with locally distilled spirits and a solid selection of whiskeys.
Features & Honest Patron Experience
The food menu is built on “Homemade Pub Favorites.” You aren’t getting dainty small plates here; youโre getting heavy hitters like the Mac Burger (topped with a fried mac and cheese ball), the 856 Burger, and the Loaded Pork sandwich with sautรฉed spinach and provolone. The kitchen manages to put out quality comfort food that holds its own against the impressive beer list.
The Reality: On a Friday night, parking can be a challengeโthe 36-car lot fills up almost instantly, and you might find yourself walking a block or two. Itโs a high-volume spot, meaning service is fast and efficient but can feel brisk when the house is full. If you want a quiet intimate chat, head to the side dining room; if you want to be in the thick of the Runnemede social scene, stay at the bar.
