Bar Description
If you are looking for a spot that perfectly bridges the gap between a historic neighborhood saloon and a modern culinary destination, Pudge’s Pub in Gloucester City is the place to be. Located in the building that housed the legendary Maxโs Seafood Cafรฉ for decades, Pudge’s has taken up the mantle with deep respect for the venue’s history while injecting a fresh, high-energy tavern vibe.
The location itself is a piece of local history, dating back to 1890 and operating as a saloon since 1912. Walking in, you are greeted by that unmistakable “old-world charm”โthe original tile floors, the warm glow of the wood bar, and an atmosphere that feels comfortably lived-in. However, the energy is brand new. Opened in late 2025 by the family behind the original Pudge’s Steaks (famous in the Philly suburbs), this spot is “re-fired” and ready to serve.
Features & Highlights
The food menu is a powerhouse that covers all bases. First and foremost, they brought their Award-Winning Cheesesteaks to Gloucester City, and they live up to the hype. But they didn’t abandon the location’s roots; they retained the chef from Max’s Seafood, meaning you can still order high-end favorites like Chicken Piccata, Lobster Ravioli, and the famous Maxโs Mussels (available in Red, White, or Thai sauce).
For the bar crowd, the “Pub” side of the name is well-represented. The Cheesesteak Eggrolls and Pudge’s Meatballs are perfect starters. The drink list is extensive and thoughtful, featuring a solid lineup of draft beers ranging from Miller Lite and Yuengling to craft options like Yards PPA and Allagash. The cocktail program is surprisingly elevated for a pub, with signatures like the Espresso Martini, Michterโs Rye Old Fashioned, and the peanut-butter-whiskey-based Misfit Toys. Whether you are there for a “Smash Burger” and a beer or a full seafood dinner with a bottle of Caymus, Pudge’s delivers a quality experience without the pretension.
