Bar Description
Bocca Coal Fired Bistro is a Margate must-visit that effortlessly combines the sophistication of an upscale Italian eatery with the vibrant energy of a shore-town bar and lounge. This isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a versatile dining and nightlife destination that truly offers something for everyone, whether youโre settling in for a romantic dinner or looking for a lively weekend hangout.
Stepping into Bocca, you immediately sense the dual nature of the venue. The space is intelligently divided, featuring a casual, modern pizzeria side, a more formal and sophisticated dining room, and, most importantly for the night owl, a buzzing and intimate bar and lounge area. The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance: refined enough for a great date night, yet relaxed enough to grab a burger in your beach attire.
The star of the show is unequivocally the 900ยฐ coal-fired oven. This scorching heat source is the secret behind their critically acclaimed pizzas, delivering a signature crispy, slightly charred crust thatโs impossible to replicate in a standard oven. The menu is a playground of flavor, moving seamlessly between classic Italian dishes and modern bar fare. Don’t skip the standout appetizers that have become local legends: the sweet and spicy Bocca’s Famous Thai Tail Tenders, the decadent Crispy Brussels Sprouts with bacon and smoked aioli, and a rotating selection of fresh items from their Raw Bar, including local Jersey Half Shells.
Bocca’s dedication to inclusivity is commendable, offering a full menu with readily available options for vegan and gluten-free diets, including coal-fired vegan pizza and hearty salads like “The Hack 2.0.” Meanwhile, the main menu tempts with house-made dishes like Nonna’s Meatballs, creamy Beef Ragรน over fresh pappardelle, and weekly butcher’s cuts for the steak enthusiast.
As a bar enthusiast, the full-service bar is a major draw. It features creative cocktails, a robust selection of wine, and, crucially, plays host to live music weekly. Patrons can enjoy happy hour specials daily in the bar and lounge area, making it a reliable spot for after-work drinks or a pre-dinner aperitivo. For sports fans, Bocca also serves as a great spot to catch a game, making it a complete entertainment package.
History
Bocca Coal Fired Bistro was established in 2012 by local partners Lou Freedman and Ron Citta, who both grew up in Margate. They undertook a complete transformation of the site, which was formerly home to the local spot, Sailfish. Opening officially around October 2012, the venue introduced the unique concept of high-heat, coal-fired pizza to the Margate dining scene, quickly becoming a fixture in the Downbeach community despite opening just around the time of Hurricane Sandy.
