Bar Description
Ah, Balsamo’s Pizza. When you talk about authentic, no-frills, community-centric spots in South Jersey, this Lindenwold gem stands out. It’s more than just a pizzeria; itโs a full-service, one-stop shop for comfort food, cold craft beer, and essential package goods, all wrapped up in a welcoming, unapologetically Philly-centric atmosphere.
As a dining and bar enthusiast, what immediately draws me to Balsamo’s is its unique blend of a classic neighborhood kitchen and a serious bottle shop. This isn’t just a BYOB slice jointโitโs a place where you can grab a massive, slightly floppy but utterly delicious South Jersey slice, pull up a seat, and pair it with a thoughtfully curated draft or bottled craft beer.
Features & Enthusiast Highlights
-
The Best of Both Worlds: Balsamo’s is one of the few places in the area where you can order a full Italian dinner, a famous panzarotti, and an excellent six-pack or bottle of wine for delivery. They hold a rare distinction in the area by offering food, wine, beer, and liquor delivery.
-
The Atmosphere: Reviews consistently point to the decor: it’s a haven for Philly sports fans. Expect a casual, buzzing environment perfect for catching a game or just settling in for a satisfying meal.
-
The Fare: While the classic cheese slice is a winner, the menu goes deep. Look for specialties like the Ghost Pepper Cheese Pizza for a serious kick, the unique Maui Pizza, or a perfectly done Sicilian slice. Beyond pizza, they offer a full lineup of Hoagies, Cheesesteaks, and classic Italian dinners like Chicken Parm and Baked Ziti, which are perfect for pairing with their liquid offerings.
-
The Bar Program: Thanks to their liquor license, they go beyond basic domestics. They feature a revolving selection of craft beers, highlighting local breweries, and have a good selection of wines, including the locally famous Valenzano Winery out of Shamong, NJ. They seamlessly combine the function of a pizza parlor, a casual dining spot, and a discount liquor store.
A Rich South Jersey History
Balsamo’s Pizza has been a fixture in Lindenwold since 1987, founded by Bartolo. It gained its current identity in 2007 when it was purchased by Jason Martinโwho started there as a pizza delivery driverโand his mother, Patricia Martin.
The major transition into a full bar/restaurant happened in 2013. Following the tragic fire that destroyed the beloved Jerseyโs Pub during Hurricane Sandy, Balsamo’s acquired that establishment’s liquor license. This pivotal moment allowed them to move beyond just pizza and offer full package good sales and on-premise drinks, cementing their status as a true community hybrid. They moved to their current, larger location on East Atlantic Avenue in 2010.
