Bar Description
If youโre looking for a dining experience that perfectly balances historic grandeur with the relaxed elegance of the Atlantic coast, the Peter Shields Inn & Restaurant in Cape May is a destination you can’t miss. Set in a breathtaking 1907 Georgian Revival mansion directly across from the ocean, this venue feels like a step back in time, offering a level of sophisticated charm that few places in South Jersey can replicate.
The history here is as rich as the menu. The mansion was originally built as a private residence for Peter Shields, a prominent figure who helped drive the eastward expansion and development of Cape May in the early 20th century. Designed by Philadelphia architect Lloyd Titus, the building remains an architectural masterpiece, featuring massive Tuscan columns and a grand portico that commands attention from Beach Avenue.
Features & Ambiance
For years, the PSI was known as one of the townโs premier BYOB destinations, but as of January 1, 2025, the venue has evolved. It now offers a full spirits, wine, and beer list, though they still allow wine enthusiasts to bring their own personal bottles for a corkage fee.
The dining experience is spread across five distinctive, candlelight dining rooms, or you can choose to dine al fresco on the front porch to soak in the ocean breeze and the sounds of the surf. Under the direction of Executive Chef Keith Mitchell, the kitchen turns out high-end, seasonally driven American cuisine. Signature items that guests consistently rave about include the Colossal Crab Salad, Short Rib Risotto, and the Lobster Risotto. For dessert, the White Chocolate Bread Pudding is widely considered a “must-order” locally. To complete the atmosphere, a live piano player often performs, adding a layer of timeless elegance to your evening.
